OBJECTIVE ACHIEVED

Mila esker bihotzez. Some days ago, during the sizzling month of June, we announced that we had requested a loan from Koop57(Ethical and Solidary Financial Services), an organisation of which we are members. We had to guarantee the amount requested, to find guarantors for consonni. We told you about this and in record time we achieved our goal, two weeks before the deadline we had set. Many thanks.

The immediate community

We often appeal to our immediate community, which is a very abstract notion – who forms part of it, how should one reach out to them, does such a thing really exist? Embarking on this adventure with Koop57, even though it gave us vertigo, was an excellent means of testing the support that consonni enjoys and developing a fruitful dialogue with multiple agents. consonni does not only consist of the people who form part of the current working group. It is a much broader reality: authors, artists, translators, correctors, designers, lawyers, bookshops, other publishers, other art organisations, presenters, relatives, friends, student interns…and a lot of you answered us. Without all the people who at some time have formed part of consonni and our collaborators, both regular and one-off, the people who read our books and accompany us in our everyday activities, none of this would mean anything. consonni exists thanks to its immediate community. And in this particular adventure, thanks to Koop57, we are contributing our grain of sand to building a more social and solidary economy, jointly involving ourselves in other forms of funding that go beyond the traditional bank and its subsidies.

Diversity of forms of support

We launched an appeal on the net and social media, using personalised emails, through personal contacts…And the response has been overwhelming. We achieved a little more than 50 guarantors in much less time than we had expected, and moreover it’s the holiday season. We’ve been forced to close the appeal early in spite of many people insisting that they want to be guarantors and the fact that unfortunately there are people who experienced a computer error that for several days affected the online form, thus leaving some people out (only people who have received a confirmation email have effectively become guarantors). There are also those who showed their interest in sponsoring consonniin other ways, and we think it’s great that dialogue should open up other paths. As we have explained in some depth throughout this process, there is a very wide range of ways to support consonni. Collaborating with us, attending the activities we organise, following us, reading us, feeding debate, making us think, telling us about your activities so we can learn from them…

 A further step…

A lot still remains for us to design, organise and carry out, but luckily we are not alone.

This has been a further step, one of many, and little by little we are approaching the goals we set ourselves, but there is still a long way to go, a lot to be done and to learn. We aim to become more autonomous from public grants and to increasingly diversify the sources and forms of our funding. We are we working on this in order to strengthen our publishing activity, improve the working conditions of the team and our other collaborators, support local and international creative and critical talent, continue developing a variety of activities (workshops, artists’ residencies, podcasts, radio shows…), consolidate our book collection El origen del mundo[The Origin of the World] and increase the number of books we publish in future. In short, we intend to continue working to build a fruitful dialogue between literature and contemporary art, and to continue producing and publishing critical culture.
