RADIO SHOW CONSONNI

Since 2015, Radio Show consonni

From consonni we research in diferent ways to battle and scatter content related with critical culture, so that we adopt multiple formats (books, artistic productions….) and since 2015 also podcasts and Radio Shows.

The radio is a medium that produces experiences of intimacy and distance at the same time, it is compounded by extracorporeal voices which incarnate imagined and real bodies, constructing everyday life in common. In his writings on the radio, Walter Benjamin defines the voice as a guest that is received at home and states that the radiophonic medium, which for him was inseparable from the educational task, is a riskier technique than the theatre since it “not only mobilizes knowledge in the direction of the public, but mobilizes the public in the direction of knowledge”. So that we realise live broadcasts about diferent issues, which are kept alive in podcasts for public consult.

The Thursday 31st of May, inside Prototipoak, the international meeting of new artistic forms curated by Rosa Casado and Mike Brookes, we celebrate our Radio Show consonni “Speech Sound”.

“Speech Sound” is the tittle of a science fiction story by Octavia E. Butler, who won the prestigious Hugo Award for the best short story and for the first time in 1984. The story is about an illness which suddenly affects the ability to speak and/or read, write and reason; mainly to right handed and men. In a defeated civilisation, Butler tells the story of Rye, a woman who tries to cross the 20 miles to Pasadena among people whose only reliable forms of communication are groans and violent, obscene and unintelligible gestures.

We invited different people to read, listen, interpret, analyse, draw, sing and dance this chilling inspirational text by a must-read author for feminist science fiction and afrofuturism. Within the context of feminism, anthropology, psychology, sociology, radio theatre, berstolaritza (Basque improvised poetry), activism, dance, music, sign language, and performance, etc.

We counted on the presence of the journalist and speaker Alicia San Juan, Miguel Deza, Stel García and Chusé Fernandez from the radio theater school TEA FM, Radio Vallekas, the sociologist and educator Helen Torres, the audiovisual and literary translator Carla Bataller, the (in)dependent curator and investigator Sonia Fernández Pan (Esnorquel), the teacher and researcher Iñaki Martínez de Albeniz, the journalist and bertsolari (Basque improvised poetry) Nerea Ibarzabal, the journalist and feminist activist Irantzu Varela, the social worker and feminist Hilaria Vianeke, the painter and illustrator Pablo Gallo, intermedia artist Tunipanea, the dancer and choreographer Bea Fernández, the choreographer Eulàlia Berguedà with the musician Marc Naya, the artist Xoan Anleo, the collective Horman Poster with the senegalese dancer and musician MBaye Sene, the performer Myriam Rzm and the musician Okkre (in collaboration with Eomac).

The General Directorate of Cultural Promotion of the Community of Madrid continues its activities with the third edition of the Madrid 45 training program. The goal of this program, directed by Sergio Rubira, is to complement those aspects not included in academic visual arts programs, encourage debate on the most contemporaneous artistic production and energise the artistic context of the Community of Madrid. This workshop will be dedicated to analysing the self-cartography that consonni, the art producer and publisher, has elaborated over more than twenty years. In this process productions and publications will be mapped, commenting on ways of doing, and discovering networks of collaboration for uncovering the production apparatus that underpins this project.

“All we don´t know” is the tittle chosen by Madrid 45 workshop´s participants, who had the oportunity to create a Radio Show with the colaboration of the technician Alberto de la Hoz. It was made with the participation of Alba Gómez, Amalia Ruiz, Arantxa Boyero, Arantxa Romero, Elsa Velasco, Lara Molina, Lorena Beneitez, María Menchaca, María Rogel, Mónica Fernández, Ro Gotelé, Rocio Gutierrez and Sara Santana.

LaPublika (2014-2016)
June 22nd 2016

(consonni´s photograpy)

LaPublika, directed and coordinated by the art producer consonni, is defined as a laboratory of artistic research on the concept of the public sphere. It was co-produced by Tabakalera and Donostia2016.

In LaPublika, we take the radio as both a medium – for broadcasting activities via streaming and the publication of podcasts – and as a metaphor for the public sphere. A resistant mass medium, with a low spectacular intensity: an impulse beats on the radio that bears a greater resemblance to language than to vision; an impulse, we think, that is more appropriate for confronting the task of constructing common potentialities.
